You Need the 1905 Columbia Salad
Have you ever been to a Columbia Restaurant? The original Columbia is in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida with other locations around the state. The history of this restaurant is amazing with the best recipes. Among them is my favorite recipe – the 1905 Columbia Salad.
Recently, my sisters and I were joined by my nephew and had a wonderful lunch together at the original Columbia Restaurant location. It was a wonderful ending to a great week with family.
The Columbia’s 1905 Salad is a favorite.
As my husband and I traveled around Florida for his work, we stumbled on several locations. There are 7 different Columbia Restaurant locations in Florida and each and every time we eat there…it’s a given that the salad has to be a part of my selections.
As I looked on the website, there was the 1905 Columbia salad recipe!
Here’s where you can find it. Along with the history of this family and their restaurants.
What we love about this salad is that some of the ingredients and Worcestershire sauce is added table side. We love that.
So, here’s the recipe!
1905 Salad from the Columbia Restaurant
Equipment
- 1 serving bowl
- 1 chef's knife and cutting board
- 1 liquid measuring cup
- 1 set measuring spoons
Ingredients
- 4 C iceberg lettuce, broken into 1" pieces
- 1 ripe tomato, cut into eighths
- 1/2 C baked ham, julienned 2" x 1/8" strips
- 1/2 C Swiss cheese, julienned 2" x 1/8" strips
- 1/2 C green olives
- 2 C 1905 Dressing, below
- 1/4 C Romano cheese, grated
- 2 T Worcestershire sauce
- 1 lemon lemon, juiced
"1905" Dressing
- 1/2 C extra virgin olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 t dried oregano
- 1/8 C white wine vinegar
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Combine lettuce, tomato, ham, Swiss cheese and olives in a large salad bowl.
- Before serving, add dressing, Romano cheese, Worcestershire sauce and juice of 1 lemon.
- Toss well and serve immediately.
"1905" Dressing
- Mix olive oil, garlic and oregano in a bowl. Stir in vinegar and season with salt and pepper.
- NOTE: Although the Columbia Restaurant recipe suggests making the dressing a day or two before and refrigerate, we have found this to be more difficult to serve.
Notes
They even have a great shop.
We love to bring back their coffee, seasonings and even the bottled dressing.
Here’s a favorite seasoning that we always have in our spice rack.

1905 Salad and a cup of soup…
Perfect lunch choice on a Sunday with family. Conversation and time spent with them was priceless.
The crusty bread and butter with their Columbian coffee….divine.
Thanks, Jeremy, for treating your Mom and aunts for lunch. It was a perfect day.
And thanks to my sisters for the best week together.
Memories created and savored.
Until we come again! Love to you all!

I can’t wait to try this salad! Which coffee would you recommend, the Cuban Roast or the American Roast? I want to try it all! Even their olives & paprika sound like a must have. Thank you for sharing this recipe & the story behind it. There’s always a story…YAY!

I think I have had both of their coffees. The Cuban coffee is one that we had so much while traveling and working with so many Cuban friends while we were there…they add sweetened condensed milk and brew it very strong which is a delightful treat that I can’t indulge in often! Hope you love the salad! And…if you are in Florida…look for locations!
