A New FRONT PORCH MAKEOVER to the RESCUE!
Each year my front porch is always in some form of makeover.
In past years, there has been a new front door purchased or painted.
Last year, a new ring doorbell added. New planters or a change in those plants for the front porch to give life.
A different column, or paint on the concrete or new item of attention on the long side next to the door since that door is not centered is often in the plan.
There have been new light fixtures added in years past.
ALWAYS a new rug is added and the American flag hung from May through July.
Now, this year? You’ll need to read on to find out why a new front porch makeover to the rescue was needed.
So, what new changes would be needed this year for the front porch?
Yeah…this year the front porch plan has a twist.
A few weeks ago, in the wee hours of the morning, my husband shot up straight in bed. “Something just fell”, he said. I am a really light sleeper and that sound hadn’t awakened me.
Only his wake up call.
He went through the house with a flashlight in hand and saw nothing and came back to bed.
Guess what the surprise fall was?
The next morning, my husband rang the front door bell and said, “I found what I heard last night”, and there in pieces all across the front porch was one of the large lights that had hung next to the front door.
Shattered on the front porch in a pile of glass and bulbs and housing was that light. A complete loss. I was hoping that my ring doorbell showed the evidence of the culprit; but there was nothing recorded. Hmmmm….
There right in front of me, that porch light had been completely pulled down.
There were black marks and prints and then I saw them…
Those pawprints had to be a raccoon’s.
Now, if he, (or heaven forbid, a she looking to nest!) had just knocked down that light and left, that would have been the best possible damage; but, no, the next night, I began to hear noises in the attic above the bedroom bed.
It only took opening the door and I saw it…the soffit above the porch had been pulled down!
SERIOUSLY!
Peace had left my home and I wasn’t about to let that happen!
We made the trek the next morning to find a cage. My husband researched the best “food” for capture. Set that trap to capture in the attic and take him (or her!) far away from our “city” and woodland surrounded home…hoping he (or she!) wouldn’t find their way back.
Well, that didn’t work so well! Three rounds of food and two eaten without capture, my husband used another trick to prevent entrance or food retrieval without capture.
That little critter was smarter than the average human and didn’t take the bait.
In the meanwhile, I could hear scurrying above and I was concerned that we were nesting or it was relieving himself (or herself)- Yuk! Which will now require removal and replacing insulation, resealing all of the soffit areas to prevent another entrance. I’m concerned more installation of ceiling replacements are in my future.
But, the problem at hand still remained…
REMOVAL!
Can I spare you the details?
Finally, that raccoon was removed–hopefully, not to return.
Soffits were screwed back into place.
Can I tell you that many things were on our DIY and home improvement list in March 2020 when COVID began? Reinsulating and sealing the attic was one that has moved up the list in priorities.
But, now?
The FRONT PORCH makeover has now taken on a new leading lady role in home repairs!
I began with the list!
- Cleaning that siding, door frame and getting ready for new paint on the trim and porch concrete.
- Selecting new light fixtures that are in better proportion and add a new and beautiful function to lighting.
- Removing the old paint on the front porch with an environmentally friendly product.
- Painting the front porch to match the slate sidewalk.
- Planting new plants in the planters.
- Hanging the American flag for Memorial Day , Flag Day and the 4th of July.
- Creating a new front door decoration.
- And adding a new bit of home to the front porch.
And you know what?
That uninvited guest may have just prompted me to create a new plan that is exciting…updates our home with a new and fresh look…and gives me an opportunity to invite guests in a wonderful new way.
(I am including shopping links for your convenience at no extra expense to you! Just sharing my finds for this front porch makeover!)
Power washing was the next item on the list to clean the siding and the porch floor.
A great way to get the winter dust and dirt off and help loosen paint to prepare it for removal and a new coat. It also helped remove those traces of raccoon prints!
New light fixtures selected was the next order of business.
The light fixtures that we had were large and impressive; but, with that said, they were a bit over sized for the front porch entry. Perhaps that little guy did a favor when he took one down and another to match could not be found.
Plans to change those light fixtures were suddenly made.
Now new technology and research brought me to select new front porch lights. This time we selected those that are LED, dusk to dawn AND motion activated. These were the ones that I selected locally. I love them! Super cost effective and just may replace all four outdoor lights on the deck doors.
The paint on the front porch floor was peeling and needed an update.
Who knows what type of porch paint was first used on our front porch, but updating it only resulted in peeling and poor color choice. It was time for an update!
Environmentally friendly remover that would not create issues for my landscaping was the order of the day.
This professionally recommended product gave great results.
Simple directions were followed.
Simply add a coat, let it dry, scrape with a long handled scraper and continue the process, wetting in between coats, until all of the paint is removed.
That porch was scraped, sanded, cleaned and painted again.
WHEW!
Easier said that done! I then used a wire brush around the edges and then sanded the surface.
A new paint color to match the slate sidewalk was my goal.
We have always used Pittsburgh paints. My husband is a genius with paint.
That genius became the product selector for this project with his years of experience.
He had a conversation with a trusted employee and they agreed on the process and paint type that would work best for the project. I love that they color matched the slate sidewalk so that porch paint would match for a better overall effect.
TIP: Make sure that you always seek knowledgeable and experienced professionals to assist for your projects. A redo because of poor guidance is not worth that extra work.
Planters replanted was the next step in this front porch makeover.
I love the traditional planters that have been on my front porch.
TIP: They were a lightweight fiberglass with added concrete to the base to add support and weight to prevent blowing over. A great idea that worked.
Cleaning them, refilling them with new potting soil and adding plants to them occurs every May.
A new Ring doorbell last year made my ferns no longer an option! My thriller could no longer be a spike that I had usually planted in the center. That meant that my geraniums would have to be my thriller.
This year I went with red geraniums, Proven Winners white giant snowflake bacopa and light blue lobelia flowers to add a patriotic theme from Memorial Day, Flag Day, the fourth of July and even through Labor Day. The geraniums became the thriller, blue lobelia became the filler and the white became the spiller. They are just a few of my favorites.
There always has to be something added to balance out the odd side of the porch.
This year instead of a fern, I thought I needed something that spoke to me…so, I was on a mission to find something.
Adding the American flag to the flag pole always adds to a patriotic theme.
Just make sure that that flag is in great condition and that you understand the do’s and don’ts for using it. This year, I replaced mine if you read about it in my tribute to my Dad for Memorial Day.
Do you always light your flag at night?
At this point, the front door was screaming for a new door decoration for that front porch makeover.
This year I decided that I wanted a new patriotic design created for the door, so a new door wreath was created and added. I purchased a simple boxwood wreath, created a patriotic bow, and as usual, added a bird’s nest in to send a message to those nesting creatures that the door was “occupied”.
Adding a touch of “home” was the last item to be completed for the new front porch makeover.
Since my kids will be home this summer, that porch needed to welcome them.
A search for the right rug combination created purchases brought home and returned several times.
Does that happen to you? I finally was happy with this choice.
A piece of vinyl had been purchased for a bathroom remodel that was replaced with tile. It was the perfect thing to add as a large “rug” for the porch and to layer a new welcome mat over. (I’ve ordered a welcome mat to top that vinyl!}
I made a trip to Hobby Lobby and found this decorative piece. Half price! How perfect! We added a bit of velcro at the bottom to add more stability and prevent it from moving on the wall.
In the yard next to the porch, a small American flag was the final touch. A few petite red knock out roses and new landscaping with mulch is making me happy.
That uninvited guest really helped rescue that front porch with a makeover.
We truly hope that he doesn’t make a return appearance.
The front porch makeover plan now has ceiling and soffits for the future., since his removal has made them less than desirable. But, for now?
Let’s just enjoy the finish of this front porch.
We are truly thankful for the progress that’s been made!
And if you are in my neck of the woods and need your feet under my table?
This is the scene that will welcome you. A new front porch makeover that is now complete. (just that front porch mat left!)
Remember that back porch makeover?
well…keep following! A bathroom complete remodel created a huge do over for that back porch…can I tell you the scraping and sanding and painting continue there?!! Stay tuned for the next episode.
Meanwhile, I will need a nap!

Animals can be so destructive it’s horrible and quite scary at times. Love, the new lights and refresh to the porch.
I also love the new wreath and your plants are very pretty too. Happy you resolved the problem.
Wem had a bear rip our cherry blossom tree apart in our old home. To get to a bird feeder. It was amazing. So happy for the most part we have bunnies to worry about.
Pinned!

Thanks, Cindy! I never knew that they were capable of such destruction. I have had so many people tell me of raccoons in chimneys and attics since this happened! Hoping that I never have to deal with that again! He did do me a favor in starting all over with the porch. It’s so great to have a new vision, isn’t it??
Lynn Vogeler
The front porch looks fantastic. I just love using the vinyl flooring as a base front door rug. It looks great and it’s easy to clean. Genius!
Leslie J Watkins
Thanks, Lynn! I know, right? I had purchased that vinyl for the small bathroom and then decided to go with a great tile instead. When I was having difficulty finding a larger rug to fit the porch dimensions, it hit me that it would be perfect. Glad it solved both problems!
Vickie Ramey
It’s absolutely beautiful! So much work! But your talent shows through in every project you tackle! Wish I were there to be welcomed!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you! I can’t wait til you are home again! Love you!
Cara
Loving the new lantern lights! Also your wreath is adorable!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you! I love the Dawn to Dusk and LED feature on those lights and I am always a fan of a green wreath.
Juliet
Order has been restored! Raccoon are adorable … but they can sure wreck havoc. Love how everything looks now and you’re 4th of July ready! xo
Leslie J Watkins
I know, right? I hope that “guest” doesn’t return…but, I love that new porch!
Martha Wallace
Leslie, it’s beautiful. Clean, fresh & simple! So welcoming! The kids will love it! Great job!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Martha. I love so many things about it, too.
Dee
Well thank you 1st of all for being so humane, I appreciate that! It’s amazing what can facilitate a change, and all your hard work has definitely paid off! I think the use of the vinyl tile was a super cute idea it looks fabulous there, the new like fixtures are amazing, it’s just so in keeping with the exterior of your home. So much work Leslie, but it paid off in spades my friend!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Dee. I am so in love with those new lights. They are a soft dim light from dusk to dawn and brighten with motion. And using that piece of vinyl outside is my new favorite!
Kippi Ohern
Your porch makeover turned out perfect!
Hugs,
Kippi
Leslie J Watkins
Thanks, Kippi! I need to redo my bow with a “Kippi” bow that I am in love with! The bathroom redo caused the screened porch to be done last weekend…sheetrock and tile shrapnel everywhere weren’t kind!
Renae
Your porch looks gorgeous! You did an amazing job. It looks like it was a ton of hard work. Hugs to you.
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Renae. That stripping, scraping, and sanding were repeated last weekend on the screened porch with new painting there. Tile man and Sheetrock Jim destroyed that back porch floor so it has had a complete redo, too! Not sure how this list of redos got so long! Guest bathroom should be completed today. Kids arrive on Monday! Hope I get it all done!
Linda Johnston
Yikes! Interesting what things motivate up to get something done that maybe wasn’t even on your list! I looks great! We have had damage some mice in the attic. Between our dogs and new construction in the former field across the road from us has ended the mice problem.
Leslie J Watkins
I know, right? I am pleased with the results. We are reinsulating the attic and I am hoping that will prevent any future return of raccoons. I am not a fan of mice either! Our neighborhood cats have helped with that.
Corine
Oh my goodness those rascals can do so much damage. When we bought our house they had been living in the attic and tried to come in every night. It was a nightmare. They are finally gone. Your porch turned out beautiful!
Leslie J Watkins
Oh, Corine! I would have died! We are reinsulating the attic when it’s a little cooler, so I am hoping that will help prevent a future episode! Have a great weekend!
Danielle
Oh no!!! How bizarre!!! I had no idea a raccoon could do such a thing!!! It all looks so pretty now, though!
Leslie J Watkins
I know. In all my life I had NO CLUE! Amazing how many have shared their stories of raccoons in the attic and chimneys since this occurred… Praying he or she NEVER returns! I am enjoying the redo, though. Just don’t need any more favors! Ha!
Carol Karl
You should really thank that racoon! Your porch looks amazing. When i lived in Canada a friend had a nest of racoons in their ceiling. The exterminator’s answer was to place loud heavy metal to them and she left with her babies. He said there was no point removing them as they would just come back. I’m so glad you managed to get rid of yours. Your porch is very pretty. I love how you used the vinyl for the ‘rug’. That’s give me an idea! Thanks so much for sharing your story.
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Carol. I am so loving using that vinyl outside since I didn’t have a place for it inside. I cannot imagine a nest of raccoons in the ceiling! Heavy metal, huh? good to know if they make a reappearance! Which I am praying they don’t return! Happy weekend, friend!
Kim Waldorf
Oh my! How horrible! We had bats in our attic, last summer, and it cost a small fortune to get rid of them. The new lights are great and your whole porch looks so pretty. Here’s to being rid of the raccoon!
Leslie J Watkins
Oh, my goodness! Bats! I can’t even imagine. I have heard of people having them in their chimney, but, attic. Oh, my! Aren’t those lights the best? I love that they turn on dimly at dusk until dawn and light up more when motion detected. Plus they are LED- win/win, right? So happy with them. Adding them to the deck and screened porch!
elizabeth@pineconesandacorns
Everything looks beautiful! The little critter did you a favor.
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you. I know, right? Hope he doesn’t do any more favors! ha!
Alda Ellis
oh my what a story! Something absolutely delightful came out of a porch catastophe. I love your wreath and the urns are beautiful. Isn’t it funny when one little mishap can lead to a whole makeover? Yours turned out beautiful!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Alda. I hope to never go through that uninvited guest experience again. Dreadful! Had no clue their destruction. A complete reinsulating of the attic will occur when the weather is cooler…and I am hoping that we find no other damage there in the process!
Marie
I can’t believe a racoon tdid that damage! We had one racoon in the crawl space of our old house. In the current house, racoons set up their latrine (bathroom) in our backyard! So gross. And it wasn’t just one, there were many. I digress, your porch looks amazing! So clever to use the vinyl here.
Leslie J Watkins
Oh, Marie! How horrible! I hope the latrine doesn’t happen here! Goodness! I am so happy that I thought about another use for that vinyl. I really loved it and am happy to use it there. Thanks for stopping by!
Kimberly Jones Snyder
Everything looks so lovely! Great Job! Glad you caught the culprit! I think I would have had a heart attack if something got into the house!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Kimberly! Love the new porch look. As for that rascal? You have no clue, friend! I was freaking out hearing it above us! I hope it never returns.
Claudia
Looks great!! Never heard of a racoon climbing up like that on your porch! Just whoa!!!
I never thought of putting a rug on the porch but I like it.
Leslie J Watkins
I know, right? Me either! Since it happened to us I have heard of them getting into chimneys and business attics. Horror stories from some! Just hope he or she doesn’t return. As for that vinyl…since I didn’t use it inside I thought it was perfect for that front porch. I am loving it. So easy to clean!
Libbie
Leslie,
I LOVE the new light fixtures! Such a lovely update!
Happy Weekend,
Libbie
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Libbie. I am in love with the Dawn to Dusk feature. Had no clue that I needed them! Have a great weekend, friend! Counting the hours until my kids are all home.
Kim
It’s an absolutely beautiful makeover…and ugh racoons. We have them here, too and they do cause a lot of damage. You’ve certainly made lemondade out of the the lemons though. I adore everything you’ve done and am off to peek at those lights. We need new…
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you so much, Kim! I had no clue they were so destructive. Those dawn to dusk lights that brighten with motion are a game changer for us. In the process of replacing all of the outside door entry lights with them. Thanks so much for your sweet encouragement. It means so very much.
Rosemary Palmer
One of those happy accidents – kind of. Porch looks great. I love the urn planters.
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Rosemary. I am thankful for the result, but, not so much for the cause!
Lynne
Your porch makeover turned out beautifully! I love how you used the leftover vinyl as a “rug” for your porch! How clever! It all looks so lovely!
Leslie J Watkins
Thank you, Lynne. I know, right? When the lightbulb hit to use that vinyl, I was in love. Thanks for stopping by!
