Crockpot Caramelized Onions

The easiest way to create the most flavorful caramelized onions for soup, burgers and other recipes.

Equipment

  • crockpot
  • 1 knife and cutting board
  • 1 Pressure canner and stove, if you are going to can them optional

Ingredients
  

  • sweet onions, sliced enough to fill your crockpot
  • olive oil, just to drizzle over the top

Instructions
 

  • Peel onions and remove tops and ends. Slice into thin slices and fill up your crockpot.

  • Drizzle onions with a little olive oil.

  • Cook for about 15 hours until onions have cooked down and caramelized. You choose at which depth of caramelization and color you like.

  • At this point, you can add to pint or half pint jars and pressure can for 70 minutes at 10 lbs. pressure OR add to freezer containers to use later OR use within a few days of making.
    Always follow your pressure canning instructions for your canner when pressure canning.
    TIP: Just note that if you are canning, more cooking will darken the color of the onions.

Notes

An easy way to make the perfect ingredient to add to add to burgers, French onion soup or other favorite recipes that need the depth of flavor from caramelized onions.
The only drawback is smelling the wonderful aroma all night long if you are cooking overnight!
