1 apple/peeler/corer/slicer optional, but makes peeling, coring and slicing much easier
storage containers freezer or canning jars, rings, lids and water bath canner
Ingredients
6lbsapplesvariety of apples works great
1Tlemon juice
2Cbrown sugar
1dashkosher salt
1Tcinnamon
Instructions
If you have an apple peeler/corer/slicer, it makes this job much faster and easier. If not, peel, core and slice the apples.
Add apples to a crockpot and turn on high.
Add brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and salt and stir into the apples.TIP: Lemon juice adds brightness and salt balances out flavors.
Add lid and cook on high for 4-5 hours.
Stir apples about once an hour and check on the consistency.
At this point, if your apples are the consistency you like for "cooked apples" or apple pie filling, stop and add to freezer containers or water bath can for 15 minutes to add to your pantry.
If you'd like more of a jam consistency, cook on low for another 4 hours. TIP: If you want more "juice" cooked off, remove the lid and cook for another hour or so on high.
When it's the right consistency for "jam", simply add to freezer containers to add to the freezer OR canning jars and water bath can for 15 minutes.
Notes
The EASIEST way to cook apples! The beauty of this recipe is that you can cook down to the consistency for what you are using the apples for. How fun and easy is that? The jam consistency is perfect on biscuits or toast. Enjoy!
