Need An Easy DIY Pinecone Christmas Tree?
I’ve got you!
Do you have a theme for Christmas decorations? I usually don’t truly have a theme…but, perhaps a “vision” is a better description. I guess that’s where the easy DIY Christmas tree vignettes idea came into view.
Do you have a theme?
For some reason when I began decorating for fall, I was drawn to acorns and then pinecones became the next item to add to the natural feel.
That’s when the vision for Christmas began to take shape.
We have a friend who has many pine trees in her yard. Pine straw is gathered for her mulch; but, the abundance of pinecones caused her to ask if we needed any.
YEP!
Bring on the bags of pinecones was my response.
Then there is moss that I have been drawn to to be added into the mix.
I don’t know about you…but, I LOVE miniature trees set in vignettes during the holidays…

Some on trays and maybe a few on side tables.
Maybe even a few trees under a cloche were where my mind was headed.
Planning those little DIY Christmas trees began.
In my garden shed I have the sweetest little clay flower pots in various sizes. Out they came, washed and dried and ready to begin.
Next came the bags of pinecones in various sizes to add to different sized flower pots. TIP: You might wash or place pinecones in a low heat oven, if you are concerned with mites or spiders from them.
I pulled out styrofoam and cut pieces to fit into each pot.
The glue gun adhered each piece of styrofoam to the inside of each flowerpot.
Usually moss covers all styrofoam, but because I needed to glue on all of the pinecones, I just added the moss to the outer edges of the styrofoam with some of them and then attached the pinecones to the styrofoam and pot with a glue gun. This ensured that the pinecones stayed glued to the styrofoam and pot.
Those little pinecone trees made me so happy!
Then it dawned on me that I had already purchased larger pinecones to add to my staircase garlands for Christmas. When I added a large one to the larger pot it provided the layering that I needed with that sweet grouping of Christmas trees. Adding a “smaller” large one to a size smaller pot gave me a medium size. The smaller pinecone was added to the smallest pot for the smallest version of the pinecone tree.
They were grouped on a table…on the mantel…on a serving tray…and they were perfect everywhere.
What I love most is that they are certainly the perfect touch to complement my fall decorating.
Then when Christmas decorating begins, I might add a bit of narrow Christmas ribbon around each with Christmas greenery and items added to move them into the Christmas mood. I added a tag to one in the cloche to give you a hint of Christmas decorating to come with them.

DIY Christmas Pinecone Trees
Equipment
- Glue gun
- serrated knife
Materials
- Brown craft paper to cover work area
- Pinecones to use for trees
- Clay flower pots to fit size of pinecones
- Styrofoam
- Glue sticks
- Moss, optional
- Ribbon, twine, tags to add to trees
Instructions
- Cut styrofoam to fit clay flower pot.
- Glue into bottom with glue gun.
- Add a touch of moss around outer edge of styrofoam, leaving styrofoam open to glue on pinecone to center.
- Add glue to edge of pot and center of styrofoam and add pinecone. Decorate with twine, tags, or ribbon, if desired.

I know, right? It was certainly a light bulb moment. I was thinking I would just take the pinecone apart and glue to a styrofoam cone, right? and then I realized they were perfect little trees on their own. Those pinecones are beginning to take over Christmas here!
