Capturing a Memorable Winter Picnic
Winter has arrived. Less light. Much colder. So, how do you battle the dismalness? By having a memorable winter picnic, of course. Being spontaneous. Planning an adventure. Taking it to a new location.
I’m all in!
Can I tell you how excited this made me? The planning. The anticipation. A new adventure for just the two of us.
Off I went. Gathering items to take. Planning the menu. Take out allowed. Even shopping for our favorite menu items at a local deli was part of the fun and spontaneity. Whether soups, or sandwiches or fruit or sides…you choose your favorites. Kirchoff’s never fails. The turkey artichoke sandwiches with french onion soup and potato salad were heavenly with a pickle and fruit. Can you believe those amazing cookies??? Perfect with our favorite hot tea. I waffled between hot tea and hot chocolate with my favorite homemade marshmallows I shared in the spring, but the cookies and hot tea won the tie.
I began preparing tea in the thermos. Tucking in my favorite blanket, basket, mugs, and picnic items for the perfect winter picnic. That great copper tray was a Home Goods find. This was it’s first appearance and boy did it make a great one.
I’m being honest over here. I have never been on a winter picnic before. Have you? So, for real, this was a true and new adventure for us.
It was a really cold day making a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace in a national park pavilion the best location.
Loading firewood. Packing our contents to the new site.
It had been many years since we had been here. When kids were smaller. Life was a bit more complicated and spontaneity a bit more difficult.
But today, it was wonderful.
Cold. But, cozy near that fireplace. An amazing location by the lake for great conversation, a wonderful meal, hot beverages and time away from distraction.
Isn’t that what all of us need right now? Time to get away. A peaceful location. A bit of fun with friends or those you love.
A jaunt down a few trails and streams. Foraging. Finding items that brought joy. Enjoying the lake and scenery.
It was exactly what was needed to fight the gloom of winter days. Who knew a winter picnic would be an incredible memory to capture??? Give it a try. Just dress appropriately!! Happy picnicking!

We had such a glorious time! In spite of the 35 degree temperatures. Yikes! We saw 4 people total on a walking trail way away from us. It was secluded, cozy and divine!!

I know! It truly was a wonderful adventure for us! We live about 30 minutes from Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois and saw only 4 hikers total while we were there. A perfect isolated location for a wonderful, intimate and social distanced day! Hope you will try it, friend!

Love this!
I can attest to the yummy marshmallow recipe !
Just don’t make it in warm weather even though it was still yummy!

I think you have to eat those marshmallows quickly! And the microwave is certainly a better way to make s’mores with them!! A new post with them coming up soon!
