Simple Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
Are you a celebrator of St. Patrick’s Day? Have a bit of Irish heritage? or just love another holiday to celebrate? I may fall in the later category; but, I am a true corned beef and cabbage lover!
Not too much of a St. Patrick decorator, but there will be a few green touches, a wreath and perhaps a shamrock plant just to nudge spring to make a grand appearance!
Are you familiar with the history of St. Patrick’s Day?
Guilty here of thinking that it’s more about the leprechauns and pot of gold than a spiritual meaning; however, in researching it…there’s a bit more.
Did you know that the shamrock really symbolizes the trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit with the three leaves?
Are you like me and thought it purely meant the luck of the Irish? like wearing green?
That made celebrating the holiday just a bit more “adult” and not the “childlike” version I left in school.
A move from the usual fairy garden and leprechaun focused decor to something more suiting.
Today, I am celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a group of bloggers.
Thank you Carol @blueskyathome for pulling all of us together to share some great St. Patrick’s Day ideas with all of you.
In thinking about how to incorporate decorating for the holiday in my home, simplicity and “green” became my focus.
Here are some simple ways to add the holiday to your home:
1. Begin with a new green plant.
Shamrock plants and ferns just herald spring to me. The green reminds me that spring is just around the corner. No shamrocks found on my search, but this East India Holly fern found it’s way into my heart.
Are you like that? Do you need a bit of more green during the days this time of year to remind you that spring is around the corner? The symbolism of the shamrocks made this planter a perfect vignette where this sweet plant is the focus.
2. Find a way to add St. Patrick’s Day foods and dishes to your table.
It could be as simple as baking a corned beef, roasting potatoes and carrots, or preparing cabbage in wedges in your microwave to add a bit of festivity.
A favorite soup or chicken and dumplings served with green and white dishes adds a bit of festivity to the menu.
Or perhaps bake lemon balm cookies that show a little green from spring’s lemon balm coming up in the pots in my herb garden. These are a favorite.
Even having your morning coffee in a shamrock mug, brings a bit of St. Patrick’s Day celebratory feel.
3. Add a bit of Irish to a wreath.
A trip to the Dollar Tree did not disappoint. My focus on the shamrock symbolism drew me to a roll of shamrock ribbon. A dollar’s worth of ribbon was all that was needed to transform this boxwood wreath that had replaced Christmas above my mantel to the symbolism of this holiday.
A small nest with eggs continued that feeling of spring life that St. Patrick’s Day ushers in before the Easter season arrives.
If you love living wreaths, Laura @ Garden Answer shared the most beautiful spring wreath on her You Tube channel. Wouldn’t this be lovely to add to your spring decorations?
4. New pillows are always welcome.
New pillows that bring in a richness of green and new life always brighten your rooms. This fern pillow stole my heart!
It will need to stay around for the summer months, don’t you think?

Interesting. Like you I’ve always thought it was about the luck of the Irish. This gives me another reason to use more of my favorite green colors. Thanks for sharing all these lovely ideas.

Leslie – I think we were on the same page here. Ferns, shamrocks and subtle touches. You’ve got me beat on the delicious foods though. I think lemon balm is one of my favorites, not only because it smells wonderful but because it grows leaps and bounds on it’s own and I can’t kill it. Also – crushing on your fern pillow. I’ve got two pictures in my living room and both are of ferns. Sorry for such a long message! Happy Hopping with you. Have a wonderful weekend friend.

Thank you, Regina. Green is just my favorite to use for spring! When lemon balm comes up, my great niece and nephews remind me that it’s lemon balm cookie time! And that fern pillow?! Oh, be still my heart. One of my favorite shop finds! Always love hopping with you, too.

Leslie, thank you so much for the reminder about the meaning of the shameock. I’d forgotten that. I especially love your pot with the shamrock design. Making one like that has been in my to-do list in my head. Now I see what it would look like. Thanks so much for sharing on the Celebrate the Holiday blog hop.

Isn’t that the sweetest planter? Thank you so much for pulling us all together for this hop!
